Most everybody who knows me well also know about some of my pet peeves. The most famous being people asking me "Did you get a haircut?" when it's completely obvious that I did. Well, I have another one to add to the list.
"How are you doing?"... that question is one that I use a lot. A ton of people use that as a form of greeting. Either that, or one of it's derivatives, like "How are you?", "What's up?", or my favourite, "How you doin'?". Anyway, this is a very popular greeting, as it should be. It is a nice way of acknowledging your fellow man, as well as showing a concern for their well being!
The one thing about this greeting, unlike the standard "Hello", however, is that since it's a question, it demands some type of response. A lot of times, people will reply with a simple "Ok", "Fine", or something similar. Which is perfectly fine. I mean, a simple, canned response is fine, especially when one is in a hurry, and also when the "How are you doing?" is used as a counter-greeting to a person who has offered their greeting.
But all of this leads to my newest pet-peeve. There have been several cases recently where I would get into a greetings-exchange with different people. I would walk by and say hello, hi, or the like, and I would return with a greeting of "How are you?", "How's it going?", or "How you doing?". Like I mentioned above, this style of greeting prompts some sort of response. But in a lot of cases, I get no response at all. This just annoys the heck out of me! I know a lot of times, the question greeting becomes a mere saying, and may be just out of habit, but even when it's a canned greeting, it still is a question, and to get nothing for a response just irks me! It really comes across as rude, because it gives the impression that you either don't care to acknowledge the question, or just prefer to ignore me.
So next time, if you hear somebody ask you how you are doing, or something similar, make sure you respond with something, even if it's a simple ok. Heck, don't even bother asking back! Just say something when asked! Because anything less is uncivilized.
Of course, you could always ask if they got their hair cut...
