Time for some more American Idol. It's week 2 of the semifinals, and we're down to the top 20. 10 girls and 10 guys left. The guys go first, and during introductions, David Archuletta got the biggest screams from the girls in the crowd.
Format will be the same as last week. The theme is 70's classics. Let's get it on!
1) Michael Johns - Australian for Idol!
Song: You Can Go Your Own Way
My opinion: Not really feeling it. In the low parts, he's very plain, and sounds kinda off pitch. In the high parts, he can't quite hit that one high note. And still pitchy. Man, I'm starting to sound like Randy.
Randy: Not his best, didn't "let go", but liked it.
Paula: Great way to start off the show.
Simon: Was OK... by far, his weakness performance. Just coasted along. Weak choice of song.
Aftermath: Crowd is booing Simon, of course. Singing Fleetwood Mac was a dream for him, so that's why Michael chose the song.
Initial Prediction: He seems to be popular, but going first doesn't help things. He could be in danger if the enough of the other contestants do a good job.
2) Jason Castro - Mr. Dreds / Mr. "I Hate Interviews"
Song: Love Will Turn The Key
My opinion: Back with his guitar. Smooth voice, sounded flat in a lot of places. Got sharp toward the ending, too! Not his best, but better than the Aussie, IMO.
Randy: If you take the guitar away, the vocals weren't that great. Kinda karaoke.
Paula: He's cute... wasn't all that bad. Wants him to go without guitar next week.
Simon: Song was horrible. Didn't suit him. All out of sorts. Bad song choice.
Aftermath: Crowd is booing again. But JC flashes the victory/peace sign.
Initial Prediction: He may be safe. He has a good fan following.
3) Luke Menard - Mr. "I Sang Acapella"
Song: Killer Queen
My opinion: He's working up the camera a bit, but the song is just weird for him. All over the place, like last week. So awkward.
Randy: Difficult song... better this week. Some pitch problems, but was pretty good.
Paula: It was a great week for him.
Simon: Original singer of the song had charisma and personality. Luke has neither. Bad performance.
Aftermath: Ryan talks about how confusing it must be to hear varying comments from judges.
Initial Prediction: Thought he would be gone last week, and this week didn't help him that much. He may have a big fan following, but he could be gone this week.
4) Robbie Carrico - Mr. "I Was In A Boy Band"
Song: Hot Blooded
My opinion: Woo! Foreigner! Started out rough, but he's working it out in the middle. Has a bit of a rocker vibe to him.... just a bit, though. Best performance of the night so far, but still didn't wow me.
Randy: Doesn't know if the rock thing is for him. Good job, but not wowwed.
Paula: Thinks he's authentic, and everybody else is not seeing it. Played it safe this week.
Simon: Accuses him of being defensive towards the judges criticisms. Simon said it was an ok performance.
Aftermath: Ryan noticed Robbie closed his eyes when Randy was talking to him. Robbie said he needs to up the ante.
Initial Prediction: The guys just aren't doing that great tonight. It's really hard to say where this one will go. Off a hunch, I'll say that Robbie is safe. That could change by the end of the show, though.
5) Danny Noreiga - Mr. "I Was In A Punk Band That Sucked"
Song: Superstar
My opinion: Well, he's on key. As much as it annoys me, he's having a good night. I'll say that Ruben Studdard did this song much better, though. Pretty good vocal, though.
Randy: Problems with the vocal. Overthinking it.
Paula: Amazing vocals, but he needs to stop overthinking.
Simon: Last week was a disaster. This week was better. Was over-concentrating. He's interesting and looks good on camera.
Aftermath: He's razzing a bit with Simon again. He does the flaming head-bobs again, and Simon asks him to try talking without moving his head.
Initial Prediction: As much as I hate to say it, he's probably safe.
6) David Hernandez - Mr. "I Was In Gymnastics"
Song: Papa Was A Rolling Stone
My opinion: Good smooth, strong vocal. The girls are screaming for him... Too bad about that whole "gay stripper" rumour that's going around about him. Best vocal of the night so far, though.
Randy: Hot and very nice.
Paula: Unbelievable tonight. Personality came out.
Simon: Best vocal of the night.
Aftermath: Everybody seems happy. Simon commends him for being able to deal with criticism.
Initial Prediction: 100% safe. Unless Idol kicks him off for being a gay stripper.
7) Jason Yeager - Mr. "I Play Lots Of Instruments"
Song: Without Love
My opinion: Got a little flat during the long holds, but sounds a lot like the original artist.
Randy: ?
Paula: ?
Simon: ? (Didn't hear the judges comments, because Gryfang called during the comments, but I did hear a lot of boos from the crowd.
Aftermath: Ryan is talking to him about what went wrong. Simon says this is like the Oscars because Ryan's speech is neverending.
Initial Prediction: He's gone. Unless the last three royally screw up, he's definitely gone.
8) Chikezie - Mr. "Chee kez, yeah?"
Song: I Believe
My opinion: Excellent vocal! And he's getting into the groove of the song, too! This performance is really making me smile. IMO, one of the better performances this season. Best tonight by far!
Randy: Chikezie is back! This is why everybody fell in love with him.
Paula: Brilliant and fun.
Simon: Calls him "Chi"... looks better, sounded better... million times better than last week.
Aftermath: "Chi" said he let Simon's words get to him! But he gets a good crack in at Simon. Ryan hugs Chi for that.
Initial Prediction: He's back, and safe.
9) David Cook - Mr. "I Love Crosswords"
Song: All Right Now
My opinion: He has his guitar. Not a bad vocal. Like the guitar a bit better than the vocal. He got a bit flat in the chorus.
Randy: Likes him throwing the pick into the crowd. He's a real rocker. Good choice of song.
Paula: He's the real deal.
Simon: Solid performances. Thought he is a bit boring, though. Lacks charisma.
Aftermath: Simon took a bit of offense at the comment David shot him about Simon's opinion not mattering.
Initial Prediction: He should be safe, unless he gets backlash from the public for his Simon comment.
10) David Archuletta - Girls screaming for him before the commercial break.
Song: Imagine
My opinion: Hits that high note, and the girls are screaming... Very good vocal, considering that the song is slow... those are normally trap songs. Very good control.
Randy: One of the best vocals ever on the show. He was born to sing.
Paula: He is ridiculous... she wants to squeeze him and use him as a rear view mirror ornament. One of the most moving performances she's heard.
Simon: Very risky, but it worked. He's the one to beat.
Aftermath: He's all smiles as normal. Girls are screaming, and he's grinning from ear to ear.
Initial Prediction: Um... safe? :) No doubt about it.
Final predictions:
The two leaving will be: Jason Yeager and Luke Menard
