Time for Tuesday's American Idol rundown. This week begins the widdling down of the Top 24. Tuesday nights are men singing, and Wednesdays are the women, with Thursday being the elimination. Each Thursday, two guys and two girls will be eliminated.
Since it's a Tuesday, that means the men are up first! Ugh... I'm looking forward to tomorrow, when my girl Ramiele gets to sing! Oh well, guess I might as well start this madness.
To keep things simple, from here on out, I will be having six items on each of their contestests: Their name, song, my opinion of their performance, each of the three judges' opinions, the aftermath, and initial prediction. After the fact, I will give my overall opinion of the contestants, and give my predictions of who will be eliminated.
The theme this week is 60's songs. So, expect a lot of Elvis and Beatles. Nothing like young men singing songs way before their time!
1) David Hernandez
Song: Midnight Hour
My opinion: Being first is never good. Starts off pretty slow, then kicks it up a notch. He's good, but nothing really wowing me about his performance. Not much stage presense. Wow... he hit a really, really bad note at the end.
Randy: Liked the gospel vibe at the beginning. Fell apart at the end. Good start, though.
Paula: He has brilliant vocals.
Simon: Better than he thought it was going to be. Loved the beginning, but the rest wasn't good. He needs to loosen up some.
Aftermath: David is glad it's over. Ryan takes the time to take a shot at Simon.
Initial Prediction: He screwed up the ending, and combined with him being first, he may be in danger. Don't think he will go home, but the night is young. Let's see how everybody else does.
2) Chikezie Eze
Song: I Love You More Today Than Yesterday
My opinion: He's all dressed up! He is off to a real rough start. Seems to do good at the higher ranged notes. He needs to stay away from the low notes. Got a little pitchy in the middle, but he is really bringing it on in the end.
Randy: Pretty good. Alright. Yeah yeah yeah.... :)
Paula: He looks great. Loves him. Great R&B
Simon: (LOL, he called him jacuzzi) He hated the whole performance. Hates the suit (which Chikezie strikes back at for Simon always wearing black and grey). Too old fashioned.
Aftermath: Chikezie was arguing a bit with Simon about what he was trying to do.
Initial Prediction: He should be safe, but he may be closer to the bottom.
3) David Cook - The Goth/Punk/Rock/Potpourri guy
Song: So Happy Together
My opinion: Weird beginning.... Once he got to the chorus, he was ok, but I'm just not feeling his performance. Very awkward. Although he is hamming it up on stage! Even twirls the mic stand! Good ending, though.
Randy: Weird start, but worked it out in the end.
Paula: He rocked it and made it original.
Simon: Shouted it a bit, but was good.
Aftermath: Randy keeps going on about the rock-ness of the song.
Initial Prediction: He should be safe at this point.
4) Jason Yeager - The streak!
Song: Moon River
My opinion: Pretty good vocals all the way through. Seems kinda Disney-ish, though. Don't know if that's a good thing or not. Very consistent throughout, though. Decent performance.
Randy: He did good... lost concentration in the song, though.
Paula: It's a sentimental choice for her.
Simon: He came across as a lot older, and came across as a cruise-ship performance. Middle of the road.
Aftermath: Jason dedicated the song to his grandmother. Will take Simon's comments as criticism and build off of it.
Initial Prediction: Should be safe.
5) Robbie Carrico - Boy band member gone horribly wrong! :)
Song: One Is The Lonliest Number
My opinion: Starts off sounding like the original artist. Pretty on with the vocals, although nothing really exciting about the performance. Gets a bit offkey on the falsetto notes, but pretty decent.
Randy: Nice one, had him rocking out
Paula: Picked the perfect song. Looks fantastic. Vocals were right in the pocket.
Simon: Only performance tonight that has any semblance of making sense. Thought it was good. Not sure he's authentic, though.
Aftermath: Robbie says he's a rocker through and through. Ryan describes him as a cross between a rocker and Justin Timberlake
Initial Prediction: Definitely safe. Overall good performance.
6) David Archuleta - The youngin'
Song: Shop Around
My opinion: Strong start... hamming it up! A couple pitch problems. Has a Stevie Wonder-like voice. Very solid performance... probably best of the night so far.
Randy: Really brilliant. He's ready to go.
Paula: Brave choice, and forgets his age when he sings. Describes him as an old soul.
Simon: Best performance of the night.
Aftermath: His nerves let out, and almost seems like he's going to tear up. He loves the audience there, too!
Initial Prediction: Definitely safe. He's almost a shoo-in for the top 12 at this point.
7) Danny Noriega - This year's Sanjaya
Song: Jailhouse Rock
My opinion: Starts pretty strong, but plain... at least he's not singing with a lisp like how he talks. At times, he seems like he's about to fall behind the tempo of the song, but does enough to stay with the rapid pace. Not much too exciting about the performance. Good stage presense, but the vocals were very lacking.
Randy: Says he seemed like he was having a good time. Just ok vocals, though. "Kinda hot"
Paula: Safer song, and his performance was the focus on this song.
Simon: Verging on grotesque, destroying an Elvis song. Said that it would turn the accidental viewer away from the show
Aftermath: Judges started arguing about what they just saw. Ryan was asking what went wrong. Danny got kinda indirectly sassy with Simon.
Initial Prediction: Thinking middle of the pack. If anything, the gay vote will keep him in.
8) Luke Menard - The carpet cleaner!
Song: Everybody's Talking Happy
My opinion: A bit sharp starting out. Not much stage presense. Just standing in front of the mic. Pitch problems all throughout the song. He has the look of a star, but vocal-wise, he was all over the place.
Randy: Very pitchy. Consistently sharp. (Great minds think alike!)
Paula: Agrees with Randy. Not the best song choice.
Simon: Forgettable, which is the worst trap one can fall in.
Aftermath: Luke is leaving it up to the voters, and doesn't agree with Simon with his "Forgettable" comment.
Initial Prediction: He is in real danger. Not a good performance overall.
9) Colton Berry
Song: Suspicious Lies
My opinion: Man, what's with people singing Elvis? Started off really good, got pitchy in places. Toward the end, he kinda changed his singing style a bit, like he had finally gotten comfortable with the song. Ended pretty strong.
Randy: Pretty good. Started rough, but ended strong.
Paula: Nice to see a different side of him. Not his best performance, but had fun with it.
Simon: Ok, not as bad as the other Elvis song. Didn't get anything from that performance, though. Has no relevance in today's music industry. Said he wasn't what he thought of a recording artist.
Aftermath: Ryan is hoping that Simon can expand on his comments. Simon called it karaoke, and wished people would spend more time on their vocals than on their hair. Obvious hit on Ryan.
Initial Prediction: Not sure about him. He didn't get much screentime, and is remembered for being paired with crowd-favourite Kyle Ensley at the end. Thinking he did enough to stay on one more week, but not much more than that.
10) Garrett Haley - The young Leif Garrett.
Song: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do
My opinion: Started off pretty flat. Is maintaining his flatness throughout the song. Sounds like something from a high school musical. Ending stronger than what he started, but that's not saying much. Not a good performance.
Randy: Didn't do anything with the song. Needs to bring something new to the song. Plus, pitch problems.
Paula: Don't be afraid to be courageous
Simon: Boring, whiny, and he looks terrified, and looks like he's has been shut up in his bedroom for a month. Looks pale and some fresh air.
Aftermath: Paula is finding Simon's comments humourous, but Ryan is understanding what Simon is trying to say. Garrett takes it as constructive criticism.
Initial Prediction: With not much screentime, he is in big danger. He might get some of the female vote, since he appears to be a girl-favourite, but I don't think that is enough to keep him in. He could very well be one and done.
11) Jason Castro - The white Bob Marley!
Song: What A Day For A Daydream
My opinion: First, he's playing guitar. He is on key, started strong, putting his stamp on the song. He's pretty much doing everything right with the song. Got sharp in one place towards the end, but really gave a great performance overall.
Randy: Liked the guitar. Little pitchy toward the end. Was alright.
Paula: Blew her away. Great song choice. Effortless and joyful.
Simon: In the top 2 performances of the night. He and David have just "got it". Would have preferred him without the band, and thought it was current. Terrific.
Aftermath: He's very happy, and giggling through his words. In shock, as Ryan describes him.
Initial Prediction: He's safe. He had everything going for him in that performance, and especially being close to the end, he will be remembered.
12) Michael Johns - Australian for Idol
Song: Come On Baby Light My Fire
My opinion: He's working up the crowd, and the girls seem to like it. Decent stage presense. Sounds like an imitation of the original artist, and a couple of rough spots. Not bad, though.
Randy: Thinks he is like a legendary rocker.
Paula: He set everybody on fire. Great way to end things.
Simon: Most consistent contestant this season. Has natural charisma of a lead singer.
Aftermath: Everybody is happy. MJ was scared of what Simon would say.
Initial Prediction: He gave a decent performance, and was last to perform. He's safe.
Final Predictions:
Bottom three will be:
Luke Menard
Colton Berry
Garrett Haley
Out of those three, I think Colton will be safe, which means that Luke Menard and Garrett Haley will be going home.
