Ok, this one is for my fellow Japanese speakers/students...

I was watching a store-bought subbed version of Clannad the other day, and I came across an interesting translation that kind of threw me for a loop. It was after a scene when Kotomi-chan had a nervous breakdown, and Tomoya and gang were trying to find out what was wrong with her by asking one of the school secretaries. She couldn't give out any information, because of privacy. Now, here's where I got confused. The secretary used the word プライバシー (puraibashii), which is, of course, an English loan word, "privacy". But, the subber translated it "personal matter". I was thinking, why didn't they just translate the word as "privacy"? Or was there something that I'm not understanding?

So, here's my question (multiple choice, with me not being sure of the answer): Is this a case of...

A) A loan word that, once used in the Japanese language, is given a definition that may not be exactly the same as the word of origin?

B) An instance where the subber took creative license to give a more descriptive translation to the viewing audience?

C) The subber not realizing that this was indeed a loan word from English, and having to look up a translation?

D) A speech/language rule regarding loan words and their translation that I'm not aware of?

E) A combination of one or more of the above/something completely different?

Can any of my fellow Japanese speakers/students out there shed some light on this? Or will you be just as clueless as me?

Maybe I should just ask Hisako...

Well, here I am at Panera again, and ran into an old Steak n Shake waitress... she is graduating high school tomorrow, and that reminded me of probably my favourite high school graduation speech of all time! Well, it's not technically a graduation speech... it's more of a speech for somebody campaigning to be voted valedictorian at his school, where if selected, he would give the graduation speech.... well, it's still high school graduation related! So, hope you enjoy!

Boy, am I giddy right now! Lots of stuff to talk about, so let's get right to it!

FIrst off, just got done watching the American Idol season finale! Madam Glambert goes down, and Kris Allen wins the title! When I was looking back at the preview post I had written for the top 13, I was surprised where I had put Kris. In case you don't want to go searching for it, here's what I had written...

9) Kris Allen (Vegas Odds: 30:1)

Here is a guy that seems to be being propped as the heartthrob of the group. Simon had claimed that the women will love him, although if he does get that love, it won't be because of his voice. Vocal-wise, he's one of the weaker contestants, but he will probably stick around for a few weeks because he'll get a good portion of the love-struck female vote.

Boy, how times change! I never thought he had a chance of sticking around for too long, let alone winning the whole thing! But for a guy who got zero coverage during audition and Hollywood rounds, he slowly built up a fan base, turned in consistent performances, and just kept getting stronger and stronger as the weeks went by, until he became a serious contender, leading to his eventual dethroning of what had to be one of the most overhyped contestants in Idol history.

So on to Adam... the guy is extremely talented, probably the most talented of any contestant this season. His vocal range is unreal, and he's a natural showman. So, why was I rooting against the guy? Because he was way too over the top a majority of the time. Between the trademark high-note-turned-shrieks, the tongue waggling, and other stuff, his theatrics wore on me. Plus, throw in the fact that he could literally do no wrong in the eyes of the judges. The judges rarely criticized the guy, even when criticism was warrented. They almost turned "American Idol" into the "Adam Lambert Show". Heck, they even allowed Katy Perry last week to perform while wearing a cape with Adam's name emblazoned on the back. So yeah, with all of that going on, you can see why I was hoping he wouldn't win the thing. He'll have a music career ahead of him, but I just didn't want him to be the American Idol.

So, congratulations, Kris Allen! Good luck to Adam Lambert and all of the other contestants.

When I first saw this, I thought that there was no way this could be real. Possibly a parody of an actual commercial, a short sketch by an amateur comedy troop, or some people trying to be stupid. But I did some research, and it appears that this is a legitimate commercial for a legitimate business! So, I hope you enjoy this commercial for Red House Furniture in High Point, NC! Can't we all just get along? :)
