Greetings, my squeaky-clean fans, and welcome to yet another edition of WTF Video of the Week! For this week's video... well, there are no words that can possibly describe this. I wasn't sure whether or not to post it, but after watching it about a dozen times in a row, I figured it was just way too WTF-in epic to not put it here! This one could very well take the title of WTF Video of the Year! Seriously! WTF???? Enjoy! | ||||||||

Well, one day of the Florida trip is now in the books. I'll say it feels pretty good to be well-rested after staying up almost 30 straight hours! I had been awake since 5:00 Wednesday afternoon, and since we had to leave early Thursday morning, I just stayed awake during the flights, and during the day! But I got a good night's sleep, the coffee is brewing, and I'm looking out of my hotel balcony at the Gulf of Mexico. The waves are not very big, but the water is beautiful. Yesterday's flight in was, for the most part, uneventful. It was our friend Jason's first time flying, so the big excitement during the flight was on the first takeoff, waiting to see if he was going to pass out or something. But he came through it well, and said afterwards that it was not nearly as bad as he thought it would be. I'm just glad the storms from the night before, with all its nonstop lightning and tornado warnings, had cleared up, because I think even I would have been a nervous wreck in those conditions! Once we got to Florida, I had to haggle with the rental car person a bit... not because there was a problem with the order, but because with every other word out of his mouth, he was trying to upsell me to a higher package than the one I had requested. He would start out with trying to sell me the highest package, and once I declined and expressed my satisfaction with the one we had, he then tried to sell me the next highest package, and me once again saying everything was fine. He even tried to sell a GPS system addon, which I said wasn't necessary, since my phone had GPS. He claimed that this GPS he was trying to rent me had turn-by-turn navigation, but so does my phone. What GPS doesn't have turn-by-turn, come to think of it? Well, after that whole ordeal, we got to our rental car, which, in the ultimate shot of irony, turned out to be a PT Cruiser (the same car I drive back home for those of you who don't know). We got our stuff loaded up, and I turned on my cell phone's GPS and the thing wouldn't connect to the server!!! Go fig! So, we drive aimlessly out of the parking lot and go down this road that says "South", and follow some signs that point to "Beaches". I stopped at a Walgreens to see if there were any local maps, and when there weren't any, I asked for directions (typical man, I am not). Turns out we were actually going the right direction, so we continued down the road and stopped at a Subway for some food. While we were there, my GPS started working again, so after food and some other GPS-related shenanigans, we finally made it to Lido Beach! I can understand Doug's Facebook status update from a couple days back when he said he never wants to leave Florida. It is absolutely beautiful down here. Nice white sand, blue water, palm trees lining the beaches, gulls and pelicans flying all about, and throngs of gorgeous people... absolutely breath-taking. The resort that Doug and most of the wedding party is staying at is just amazing, as well. There's a central open-air concourse with boardwalks surrounding a small pond, stalked with giant fish, turtles, and from what I heard, a baby crocodile! I think the croc is in there by accident, though, and I haven't seen it yet, so they may have gotten it out of there. Anywho, on the beachside of their hotel, there are also a couple pools and hottubs, where we spent most of our time during the day. I thought it was just great to relax, since normally at that time, I'm wrist deep in programming. It's so nice to just get away from everything for a while. We had an hour set aside for the wedding rehearsal, which ended up being about 15 minutes rehearsal, and 45 minutes pictures. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed as if during the pictures, some of the realization that Doug is getting married started to hit everyone. During the different group photos being taken, I saw some faces that just looked like they knew it was finally happening. For me, it was before the rehearsal when that moment hit me, when Doug and I were up on his balcony talking. It was the first time during the day, and in a while, that just the two of us got to talk. We stood up there, looking out at the gulf, just chatting about random things... the past, the wedding, some of our friends... it was during this time of reminiscing that the realization of the moment dawned on me. One of my best friends is getting married. Wow! After the rehearsal, we had a dinner for everybody in the wedding party, and the guests who had made their way to the beach. Chicken, pasta salad, potato salad... all very tasty! After the dinner and some casual conversation, we all went out to the beach to watch the sun set over the water. I did get some of this on tape, although I was having some problems with my camera. After the sun went down, and some more talking with friends, it was time to call it a night. Unfortunately, I haven't really taken too many pictures yet, but I will try to get some today. I know that I plan on swimming out in the gulf today, with my underwater wrist-camera in tow, so I'm hoping to get some awesome underwater shots. Plus, today is the wedding, so I'm sure there will be plenty of pictures from that. So with that, I'm signing off for the time-being. Goodbye from sunny Sarasota! -- TG |

In the countdown to travels of my own, I encountered a different traveler today. At my church's Wednesday night Bible study, a young guy came in the building, wearing a hiker's backpack. It turns out that he is currently on a cross-country hike from coast to coast, and just happened to be crossing through this area, and stopped by our building to partake in Bible study. His name is Colin Morrison, and he is from Caldwell, Ohio, which isn't too far from here. But he started this hike of his from Portland, Maine, and is planning on going all the way to the west coast. It was cool to meet somebody like this, who is on an adventure of this sort. In talking to him, I learned that he has a blog of his own, where he is updating his trek across the country. The address is http://wayfaringstranger.weebly.com for anybody who would like to check it out. -- TG |
