Alo, kit-kats, and welcome to another edition of WTF Video of the Week! This week's entry came to me from a featured video link on YouTube, and what was strange about it was the fact that it had over 35 million views! That is one heckuvalot of hits! So, after viewing it, I was left kind of scratching my head about the whole, thing, but I can relate, because Red tends to be the same way. But yeah, enjoy the cheesy rap stylings and hear the WTF echoing in the back of your mind. Oh wait, that's the cat attached to the back of my head again! | ||||||||

It's late, and I'm about to hit the hay, so it's the perfect time for a bout of randomness! 1) I'm beginning to think that my cat, Big Rog, thinks his last name is "Ganbatte", considering how often I say that after his name! 2) Best drunk question ever: Are you wearing a vibrator? 3) Best sober response ever: No, I left it at home. 4) Random words that just popped into my head for no apparent reason: "Just think, when the pudding gets ripe, it's showtime!"... WTF? 5) I suddenly wish I had a pair of swordchucks. 6) I really need to get back on my diet/exercise program. I've been very bad as of late, and it's showing. 7) The progress on my bathroom remodeling has been slow, as the scraping of the floor has hit the hard spots. 8) The insurance adjustor is scheduled to come out Saturday morning... and I thought I could sleep in! 9) Thank you to RG for the huge laugh the other night with the best response to a Family Feud question ever! Question: What is a word used to describe an attractive man? Answer: Damn! 10) I wonder if Ben & Jerry's have or ever will have the audacity to name one of their ice cream flavours "Soilent Green" 11) EG singer Joey said on Facebook that he was thinking of opening a Mexican/Asian restaurant. My response: Ramen Tacos FTW! 12) I need to find a different cat food for my cats, especially Red. He has terrible gas that could drop a bull elephant! -- TG |

So, there is a new coffee house in Wheeling... and not one of the classic "West Virginia Coffee Houses" (read gambling parlour)... a real coffee house! Located in Elm Grove area close to Silver Chopsticks, and right across the street from Bridge Street Middle School, I give you my review for Higher Grounds Coffee House! First, for the location: At first, I thought the coffee shop was poorly located, mainly because I had never heard of the street where the shop was located (40 Junior Street), but once I looked it up on Google Maps, the place was pretty easy to find. It's actually a bit off of National Road, one of the main roads going through Wheeling. It is right across the street from the Middle School, specifically its ballfield, plus it is within walking distance from the skate park, so the location is ideal for foot traffic from younger people. However, unless you have business on that street or make a wrong turn, you most likely will not run into the shop by accident on one of your daily commutes, so the location is ideal for foot traffic and people who know that the shop exists. LOCATION: 6/10 Now, once I got there, I found the building rather inviting. The building looks like it is brand new, and the outside was very clean. There was plenty of patio seating for anybody who wanted to sip their drinks in the nice weather (if this rain would quit). For anybody who did not want to stick around, though, the shop does offer a drive-thru window. If I had any beef at all with the exterior, it was the amount of parking spaces in the building's parking lot. There are only three regular spaces and one handicap space. However, there is plenty of available street parking, and the two times I visited the shop thus far, I was able to pull into one of the standard spaces without a wait. I could see a problem if the place got hammered with business later, but you should have no trouble finding a place to park if you walk in. EXTERIOR: 10/10 When I walked in, I was very pleased with what I saw. The interior is beautiful; freshly painted, appropriate decor, and ironically enough, hanging on the wall was the same model of coffee clock that I had bought for my mother! One unique feature I saw when I got in, which other coffee shops I frequented in the past didn't have, was an HDTV! It was sitting right above the nice looking fireplace and facing the couch in the dining room. One thing I did notice, though, is that the plush furniture looked old and used. The couch looked somewhat ratty, and the chair I sat in had a distinct wobble to it. It was comfy, but one slight movement and I would do a sharp lean to the left. INTERIOR: 9/10 Before we get to the most important category of my review, here's some other features of the shop. I didn't notice all of the food offerings they had, like if they had the standard cafe fare of bagels, biscottis, etc., but a couple unique things they do offer there are hot dogs and giant pretzels, most likely to attract the younger crowd. They do offer a wide variety of soda and other drinks, if coffee isn't your thing. The baristas were friendly and were open to answering my questions on the place. When I went to put sweetener and cream in my coffee, the only type of sweetener out front was Sweet-n-Low, but luckily, they did have Splenda (my preference) when I asked if they had any. The half and half, though, was limited to the little condiment cups, and not the pourable thermos I prefer. Oh, and did I mention HDTV? ^_^ OTHER: 8/10 Now, for the all-important question: how was the coffee? Unfortunately, the coffee itself was the most disappointing part of the shop. The brand they use is Paramount, which is the same brand that is used at Wheeling Coffee & Spice, and I was never a big fan of the coffee at that shop either. The coffee is not fresh-ground, but brewed from the classic pre-sealed packets that you normally find in standard restaurants. My first trip, I tried the House Blend, and it tasted just like the coffee I can pick up from the local Convenient store: bland and unflavourful. On the second trip, I tried the Highlander Grogg, and it had more of a flavour, but only because HG coffees are usually a very nutty coffee and this one followed suit. I did taste some of the blandness I despise about Paramount coffees underneath the nuttiness, but luckily, the flavouring in HG was strong enough to cover the base taste and help the coffee go down a bit smoother. As a coffee drinker, my advise is unless you are going to drown your coffee in flavoured cream or spices, stay away from the house blend. The Highlander Grogg is the better of the two blends, but I'm not a fan of nutty blands. I have tasted a lot worse coffee before (Coffee Talk), but I was expecting so much better. COFFEE: 3/10 Final opinion: Great place if you like the environment of a coffee house with some added perks, but better coffee can be found elsewhere. FINAL RATING: 36/50 |

Heyooo! I am extremely exhausted right now, of course somewhat due to lack of sleep, but I doubt I'll get much sleep this weekend, as I've got some decent sized projects going on. But anyway, on to the topic at hand! As many of you may remember, back in March, we had a huge hail storm here, and in the aftermath, it seems like just about everybody in Shadyside is getting a new roof! Well, I finally broke down and had a guy from a roofing/repair company stop by my place to check out my house. It's a good thing that I did, because there turned out to be some significant damage to my house, including a battered and bruised roof, ventilation hat caps that were caved in from the hail, trashed siding, and gutters that were really messed up! For the siding, one side of the house got it really bad, and the hail marks are very apparent, but since the type of siding I have really isn't produced anymore, I will probably end up getting new siding on the entire house. All in all, I will be getting a new roof, new siding, and new gutters... almost like having a totally new house on the outside! So, for the siding, I'm now trying to decide on colours/designs. Although I don't yet have samples, I'm trying to think ahead as to what I want my house to look like. I'm thinking of either dark blue or a faux-brick siding if they're available. I know that one colour I'm NOT going with is white. I'm not a fan of living in a white house... it just looks so plain, and that's totally not my preference! So, does anybody have any other suggestions for possible colours? I'll let you chime away. Tomorrow's big project... replacing the bathroom floor. Ripping up the carpet, and putting down some fancy vinyl tile. Ganbarimasu! --TG |
