I have a D-Link Wireless Gaming Router (DGL-4500) that has "Shareport", a mini print-server utility that allows an individual to "check-out" a device(s) attached much like a book at a library.

I updated the firmware on the router, and evidently the newer version has some nationally-recognized bugs, virtually rendering "Shareport" worthless. Upon connecting to any device(s), the connection will be lost after 5-10 seconds.

I'm looking into just spending the money and purchasing a Netgear (or whatever brand I can find) Home Network Print Server. My intention is to be able to connect External Hard Drives to said Print Server.

Does anyone have any experience w/ this, input, etc... ?

  Nothing here, sorry :(
I've played around some with routers and such, but none with Sharepoint or network drives.

Sorry I'm late into this discussion... my question is do you have a standard desktop PC that is the home base for your standard router? The reason I'm asking is because I setup the wireless router at your parents' house the other day, and we set it up so that they could send documents to the printer from their laptop over the wireless connection, although the printer was hooked up through their desktop pc. However, there was no "print server" utility involved... we just set the printer up as a device on the network. I'm wondering if you could do the same on your existing router without having to go through a print server utility. That might be an option, and if that works, it would save you the trouble of spending money on a new router or separate print server.

No, no desktop PC. That would have made things way too easy...

Yeah, I guess that's true...

Since it was a firmware upgrade (one released by the router's company I assume), any chance of a rollback? Or if that company was at fault for releasing a faulty upgrade, any chance of a refund? It would be a shame to have to spend extra money just because the old one got screwed up by an upgrade.
