How long does it take for a Toadstool to grow those Red, green, or purple dots that indicate whether it's a Growth, 1 Up, or Poison Mushroom?

I have to wonder if, as in the manner of colouring flowers, one would be able to colour a mushroom using food colouring... and mebbe try feeding different parts of the roots into separate colour-filled containers to try simulating the dots... now, I just need to find a stray-growing mushroom with which to experiment...
