I know I normally do this earlier in the year, but since we had the State of the Union address last night, it reminded me that I needed to give this site's annual Year in Review. For those of you who are either new to this site or haven't visited in a while, I do this every year, to let everybody know how the site is doing in regards to membership, traffic, and other fun stats. Yes, I run a very transparent site! :D We are a small site, so the numbers aren't staggering by any means, but we have a nice group of regulars that keep the site fun and interesting. So, thank you to everybody who frequents this site.
This past year, our traffic dropped a bit, but at the same time, we reeled a few more of you lurkers in! We had seven new members this year, which is the most we've had in any year to date. We had approximately 250 fewer site hits in 2009 than we did in 2008, which from the way the stats go, I would almost have to attribute to fewer posts on my part. However, there are several new features on the site that show the promise of increasing site hits. The shorty codes, for instance, whenever they are used, the traffic on the site spikes. Plus, with the automatic notifications system we have setup, we get a lot of repeat traffic whenever blogs are posted, comments are made, forums are used, etc. I have a few more ideas in mind for this year to help drive site traffic up, but the responsibility falls on me for the time being to make sure that I'm posting fresh content to this site on a consistent basis.
Despite the drop in site traffic, member usage seems to be on the rise. We did set a new record this year for total logins by members, a value which more than doubled the total of the new site's existance! While total blog comments were down, the forums have become a bit more active. Of course, the overall activity of the forums doesn't compare to 2003, when I was trying to establish new threads left and right, and that was about all there was to do on the site, but it was a majour increase from 2008, when I overhauled and reactivated the forum. The other record has to do with video. In the past, most of the videos that would be seen on this site were of the WTF variety. However, this past year, we've increased the number of non-WTF videos posted to the site, more than doubling the number of years past. I look for this number to increase this year, because in my effort to provide fresh content to this site, I won't be able to come up with new long blog posts all the time, but I can always post a video for you to watch, to keep you all coming back!
What can you expect to see this year, in regards to new content and features? Well, in regards to categories that already exist, I plan on increasing the total number of videos posted to this site. I am hoping to keep coming with new WTF content every week, as well as reestablishing the "Game of the Week" category. Look for that to resume in February. Also, I need to get a lot of my old poems archived here, so I will be re-releasing some of my old work for you to enjoy or not. I will probably do one a week, and hopefully, that will inspire me to think of some new poems for future release. Plus, some of you may have heard me talking about this in person, but I haven't made any mention of it on this site yet, so here's the official announcement. I have begun work on a webcomic! This will hopefully be a weekly series that will premiere later this year. I'm still working out some plot events and characters, but I think I've got a pretty solid premise that I hope you will enjoy. As for new features, I am working on the like/dislike function for blog posts. Right around the time that feature is released, you will also see new buttons to automatically share posts on your Facebook, MySpace, and other sites. Also, I am in the planning stages for a reimagining of TGBob TV. There is one other surprise I'm holding back on, because this one new feature may be one of the biggest changes we've had on this site in quite a while, and announcing it here would probably not do the feature justice. Plus, I don't want to announce it until I'm ready to launch it, so it will be a surprise to the end! One other thing I will be doing this year is giving out awards to members for different categories for the year 2009. There won't be any physical prizes to hand out, but anybody who wins one of the awards will get a medal/trophy to be shown on their member board!
My goals for this year, in regards to site traffic and membership? First, for new members, I would like to have a double-digit year in regards to new members. I am also shooting for at least a 5000 hit year, and would like to try for 1000 hits in a single month. We would have to average just under 36 hits a day to get 1000 hits in February, which is possible, considering that the highest number of hits we've gotten in a day is 48. We just need to get a nice string of those high hit days in order to have a chance. So I will need your help in spreading the word about this site. Please spread the word, use the shorty codes if you see something you like, and keep coming back. Hopefully, this will get more people to come to the site, and eventually sign up. I will do my part and continue to post new content and tell people I know about the site.
